'Jute Area Rugs' Elegant Yet Affordable

By Mike Dennis

A major characteristic that distinguishes natural fibers from synthetic materials is versatility. Because of their natural tensile strength, natural fibers can be spun or woven into yarns and readily used for various applications. One fiber that exemplifies such characteristics is jute. Known as the Golden Fiber because of its bright color and wide uses, jute is popular for its use as burlap sacking and rope material. Sourced primarily from India, jute is recognized more for its commercial applications rather than its floor covering purposes.

Like sisal and seagrass, it was only in recent decades that jute started to gain popularity as a floor covering material. Not known to many, jutes origins as an area rug date back to ancient times in India where the golden fiber may have possibly been the first material used for such purpose.

Comparable to cotton, jute rugs are soft enough for your barefeet. Given proper care, these rugs are meant to last for years in medium traffic areas such as bedrooms and living rooms. Kept away from sunlight and moisture, jute rugs should last just as long as any other floor covering material.
