Flokati Rugs: Greek History
Just like Persian and many other rugs, Flokati area rugs also have a story to tell. According to history, they were first used as clothing to protect the outdoor people of ancient Greece namely, warriors, shepherds and travelers from the harsh winter weather. They were later on developed as a home decoration, the perfect floor covering to warm homes during the winter months and to cool in the summer season. These rugs were also used as gifts of women for their prospective husbands. Up to this day, the Flokati has retained it's impeccable reputation and quality as first-class.
Most still originate from their mother country, Greece. They are made by knotting the wool with the use of a backing material or woven wool. What makes these rugs extra special is that they are made by hand in looping the knots, and not by some big industrial machine. In a way, the process of Flokati rug making has preserved its history. You might also come across one that has been made by the ancient water ripening technique. This is done by washing them in a flowing stream wherein the material comes out soft and strong.
And just in case you thought they come in only one style, think again. They're available in styles ranging from short and thick strands or knots of wool to the long and wild look. And what's more is that they're available in different colors. Traditionally these colors were limited to elemental colors, but latest additions include fuchsia and lime, meaning there's one for everyone.
So is that all with regards to the Flokati rug? No, not quite. You see, in addition to the elegance of them and the fact that it is the ultimate in retro chic, they further have the advantage over some other styles of area rugs due to the material it is made of. Seeing as the knots are made out of wool (usually from Greece or New Zealand) as well as the backing, it means you have a rug capable of the following: absorbing 5 times it's own weight in moisture, which means that "dry" rooms will be adequately humidified while humid rooms will be sufficiently dried.
Flokati's fabric also allows it to resist static so they can be placed close to electrical appliances like your television, component and computer. It will be nice then to match one with your home entertainment system. Your den or family room will never look as good.
That being said, all that's left to do is to go out and buy one! Remember, their traditional colors are earth tones - these include white, browns, etc.; all the colors that make ideal design basics. Just take care when trying to use this rug as a focal point as the authentic Flokati rugs seldom have any type of elaborate design on them (and will therefore make the perfect accessory to a different focal point). Other than that, the sky's the limit, with more and more colors added every day for different lengths of knots.
Our best hint for decorating with rugs, is to use these flokati rugs which will suit any modern furnishings.
