Home Decorating With Rugs
Just like everything else, there are rules when it comes to decorating with rugs. Unless you place wall to wall carpet down on your floors you will need to use rugs of different sizes in order to keep certain areas warm or to look beautiful. Here are a few rules to follow when decorating with rugs:
If you are decorating a large room with a rug you want to make a certain center point somewhere in that room. Focusing on one area will make your room seem more inviting. Try placing a 4'x6' rug or 5'x7' rug in an area and place a table on top of it. Guests who sit at the table will keep their feet warm on the rug. You can purchase any shape you want to; round, hexagon, square, or rectangle.
When buying a rug for the dining area you want to measure the top of your dining room table and then add at least two feet all around. This will give you an idea of how large your rug must be. You want to be able to scoot the dining room chairs back and still be on the carpet.
Try not to place heavy furniture on the rugs. This includes your china cabinets and serving tables.
When using rugs in the bedroom place several small rugs around the bed and in front of the dresser. Avoid placing large rugs in the bedroom that will only go under the bed. This will make the rug hard to clean and possibly infected with moths or insects and you may not even know it.
Be sure to center the rugs that you place down in your bedroom to center a round the furniture. It will make the room seem off balance if you do not center.
Rugs can enhance an empty space in front of a fireplace or bookcase, or the middle of a room. It adds color and some personality or mood to the space that expresses an ambiance. When selecting a rug for a particular blank space, choose one that will complement the order or motif of the nearby wall panels and furniture or brighten the space up. An Oriental rug will be in congruent, for example, in a room which is all chrome and leather.
Also, select a rug of hardy materials that can sustain heavy usage when placing it where human traffic is high. Machine-made rugs are less sturdy than handmade ones, and darker colors or tones are preferable. They show traffic patterns less obviously.
