The Area Rug Pad - Keep That Rug From Slipping
Rugs have two major issues that you have to deal with when they are inside your home. The first is normal wear and tear. When there is foot traffic or furniture on them for long periods of time, they tend to break up. The second is how rug tend to crawl and move across the floor after being walked on.
There is a solution to both these problems. Get an area rug pad and it will help hold the rug in place so it doesn't creep along the floor as easily as well as cut down on the wear and tear on the rug. It's a better solution than other options like staples, sticky glues, tapes, and artificial rug backings.
How to properly fit an area rug pad to the rug?
When you go to look for an area rug pad, you want to find one that is slightly smaller than you rug. The idea is for the pad to not be seen at all so it needs to be at least a few inches smaller on each size. If you buy a pad that says it fits your rug, just expect the edges to not quite touch the edges of your rug and that's a perfect size. Some area rugs you own might be an odd shape and are difficult to find a pad for. This is fine because you can cut these pads to size if need be.
What other pad considerations are there?
Some pads are thick and others are rather thin. Thick pads provide more cushion on the rug. If you want that thick cushion when walking on it, get the thicker pad. These also help protect the rug more if there is larger furniture on the rug. A thin pad are mostly designed so that the rug won't slip. You might not want a thick pad but just need the rug to hold itself in place. A thin pad is easier to cut if that's something you need to do.
Be sure to at least get an inexpensive rug pad as soon as possible. It will help extend the life of your rug and make it much easier to work with.
